Current and aspiring farmers interested in growing and producing food to sell directly to consumers are encouraged to register for upcoming farm and market tours. Growing and producing food for the local market can be very profitable depending on a farmers’ experience, work ethic, and the markets he or she is able to get into. The four tours, two farms and two markets on two days each, will show farmers interested in direct market farming what it takes to make money. Touring all four farms and four farmers’ markets will allow those who attend a chance to compare the similarities and differences in both the farms and the markets, so attend all four days if possible.

Most of these farms are small but are capable of producing enough net income to support a family on, if done right. Growing practices generally include a diverse product mix, cover crops, crop rotations, and most use organic practices. Registrants will be able to see the equipment and facilities needed to operate a small farm. Combined the four farms produce vegetables, farmstead cheeses, and cut flowers.

The market tours will give those who attend a chance to observe the differences in markets, the kinds of products available at each market, how products are displayed, priced, and the signage used to market them. You will also be able to see the amount of traffic at each market and the kinds of things customers are buying. The market manager at each market will briefly talk to attendees about their market.

These tours are generously sponsored by the Caswell and Person County Carolina Farm Credit offices. Attendees are asked to provide information when they register on whether they prefer to drive on their own or to ride with other attendees on a bus or van for each day they are planning to attend. The cost of the tours is free, but attendee’s will have to bring or pay for their own lunch.
